This initiative marks a decisive step in the digital transformation of Italy and Europe, where scientific excellence, technological infrastructure, and strategic vision come together to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time: from climate resilience to industrial innovation, from the modernization of public services to the development of advanced skills in AI and data science.

The Italian AI Factory, named “IT4LIA”, is part of a broader European network of AI Factories designed to accelerate the development and adoption of trustworthy, high-impact AI solutions. Its mission is to make artificial intelligence more accessible, robust, and effective for all innovation stakeholders.

At the heart of the IT4LIA AI Factory lies one of the world’s most powerful and integrated high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructures.

IT4LIA benefits from the EuroHPC LEONARDO supercomputer, its LISA upgrade, the GAIA cloud system, MEGARIDE, and the new IT4LIA supercomputer, optimised for artificial intelligence, whose development contract was signed in April 2026, providing a computational continuum designed to meet the diverse requirements of AI-related workloads. Most of these systems including LEONARDO, LISA, GAIA, and the future infrastructure IT4LIA, are hosted at the modern DAMA Tecnopolo Data Manifattura Emilia-Romagna in Bologna, while MEGARIDE is located in San Giovanni a Teduccio (Naples). This infrastructure enables the management of the entire AI innovation cycle: from data acquisition and processing to training, inference, and real-time deployment. It is a high-performance computing ecosystem specifically designed to support research, experimentation, and the rapid scalability of AI solutions across different application domains.

IT4LIA offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to support companies, startups, research entities and public administrations in adopting and developing artificial intelligence solutions. These include access to computing resources, data preparation and management tools, cybersecurity and regulatory compliance support, as well as vertical services dedicated to strategic sectors such as Agritech, Cybersecurity, Earth Science, and Manufacturing.

But beyond infrastructure and data, there are people.
